What is Ketamine Treatment?
Originally developed in the 1960s as a powerful anesthetic, ketamine has more recently emerged as a cutting-edge treatment for various mental health conditions—most notably, major depressive disorder and suicidal ideation. Clinical use has also expanded to include conditions such as OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder), PTSD, postpartum depression, and bipolar disorder.
At Phoenix Mental Health in Seattle, we offer all available routes of ketamine administration, including IV (intravenous), IM (intramuscular), and intranasal (inhaled)—delivered safely and professionally under direct clinical supervision.
- Patients can experience results as fast as the first treatment.
How does Ketamine therapy work?
Ketamine works by blocking NMDA receptors in the brain, leading to an increase in glutamate, a key neurotransmitter. This, in turn, activates AMPA receptors, believed to contribute to rapid mood improvement. While traditional antidepressants typically affect serotonin, norepinephrine, or dopamine, they have little influence on glutamate.
This unique ability to modulate glutamate levels is what sets ketamine apart, offering hope to individuals who haven’t found success with standard medications.
- Unlike Ketamine, current antidepressants on the market do not alter glutamate levels (improves depression in patients).
What Does a Ketamine Session Feel Like?
Every ketamine session is highly individualized—experiences can vary not only from person to person but also from visit to visit. Common sensations include dissociation, altered perception of time, enhanced color intensity, and a profound sense of connectedness or calm. These effects are temporary and typically fade soon after the session ends.
How Long Do Ketamine’s Benefits Last?
IV and IM ketamine treatments tend to provide longer-lasting results than the intranasal form (Spravato). Treatment protocols generally begin with two sessions per week for four weeks, followed by a maintenance phase where booster doses may be spaced out over weeks or months.
Spravato, on the other hand, starts with twice-weekly sessions in the first month, then tapers to weekly visits in the second month. Ongoing care is tailored individually with your provider from month three onward.
Is Ketamine Therapy Right for You?
If you’re 18 years or older and have tried at least one antidepressant without adequate relief, ketamine could be a suitable option.

Will I Be Supervised During Treatment?
Yes. For IV or IM treatments, a licensed physician will administer and monitor the entire session to ensure your safety. After the session, you’ll rest quietly in a recovery area where you may listen to music or read until you’re ready for discharge.
Spravato treatments require less supervision. During initial sessions, your doctor will be present, and once stabilized, a trained Spravato technician will oversee your visits. A physician will always remain on-site during your care.
